Twenty-one Short Movie Reviews
…because sometimes, twenty-two movies make for a tired reviewer.
- Smart People - (Dennis Quaid, Sarah Jessica Parker, Ellen Page) - If the movie Sex And the City impregnated Juno, this movie would be the offspring. Follow the intellectual angst of the highly educated, while avoiding your own suicidal thoughts once the movie ends. Thumbs down.
- In The Land of Women - (Meg Ryan, Adam Brody) - A young, uninspired writer finds inspiration in the arms of a married, cancerous woman. It’s billed as a romantic comedy, but there was no comedy to be found. Still, it’s an interesting drama. Thumbs up.
- You Don’t Mess with the Zohan - (Adam Sandler) - Sandler stars as an Israeli intelligence agent who comes to NYC to fulfill his longtime dream of becoming a hair stylist. This is the first Adam Sandler movie where I said “It’ll get funnier in a minute.” It never does. Thumbs down.
- Harold and Kumar Escape From Guantanamo Bay - (Kal Penn, John Cho, Danneel Harris) - A great stoner comedy that lives up to its predecessor. Republicans and Alabama residents will want to avoid this movie. Thumbs up.
- Rocket Science - (Reece Thompson, Anna Kendrick) - A stuttering 15-year old boy joins the debate team in order to be closer to the woman he loves. Quirky, with an independent vibe. Thumbs up.
- Be Kind Rewind - (Jack Black, Mos Def) - Jack Black, blessed with magnetic superpowers, accidentally erases Danny Glover’s VHS tapes. Black then remakes all the movies with a camcorder in order to cover his blunder. Unfortunately, Black can’t save the rambling script, even with his comedic genius. Thumbs down.
- Cobra - (Sylvester Stallone, Brigitte Nielsen) - I was lamenting the lack of great action movies in the vein of Dirty Harry, then I saw this ancient gem on TBS. Stallone stars as a renegade cop - the only man who can stop a vicious group of killers. At only $5.49 [that’s after the BradBrown.com discount] on Amazon, you can’t afford not to have this in your collection. Thumbs up.
- National Lampoon’s Bagboy - (Bruce Altman, Dennis Farina, Larry Miller) - A young loser enters a grocery bagging competition. I liked it better when it was called “Employee of The Month.” Thumbs down.
- Ghost Rider - (Nicolas Cage, Eva Mendes) - Have you ever noticed Nicholas Cage’s mouth is open in every scene, in every movie? Maybe he has a deviated septum and can’t breathe through his nose, but it’s distracting. Thumbs down.
- War Games: The Dead Code - (Colm Feore, Amanda Walsh) - When you see the words “Sci-Fi Channel remake” in a movie description, you know you’re in for trouble. A young hacker must stop a rogue computer from starting World War Three. If you take the original movie, remove the fun, you’ll end up with this movie. Thumbs down.
- Empire of the Ants - (Joan Collins, Robert Lansing) - I never realized there was a period of time in which Joan Collins was considered a hottie. This movie was made during that time (1977). Giant ants attack a small group of real estate investors touring a resort community. If you enjoyed the string of animal versus human movies that came out in the seventies, you’ll enjoy this. Thumbs up.
- Mr. Woodcock - (Billy Bob Thornton, Seann William Scott, Susan Sarandon) - A young man returns home to find his mother dating his former high-school PE teacher. Thumbs up if you’re looking for juvenile comedy. Thumbs down if you’re looking for Sling Blade.
- Project Montauk: The Time Travel Chronicles - (random bunch of losers) - A documentary about the government’s supposed experimentation with time travel technology in Montauk, New York. I love a good conspiracy documentary, but the quality of this is quite bad. Thumbs down.
- Good Luck Chuck - (Dane Cook, Jessica Alba) - Dane stars as a guy unable to find true love due to a childhood curse. I can’t think of any good reason to watch this movie, unless there’s nothing on TBS or Lifetime. Thumbs down.
- We Own The Night - (Mark Wahlberg, Joaquin Phoenix) - Marky Mark continues to impress in this gritty, cop drama. Marky plays a club manager, caught between his boss (a drug dealer) and his family (cops). One of the better dramas of 2007. Thumbs up.
- The Heartbreak Kid - (Ben Stiller, Michelle Monaghan) - One of the better Ben Stiller comedies in recent years. Ben plays a newly married guy, who falls in love with another woman on his honeymoon. Thumbs up.
- I Know Who Killed Me - (Lindsay Lohan) - Avoid this movie; life is too short to waste time on this. Lindsay plays a student who loses her mind after a brutal attack. Interesting plot twists only confuse the viewer. Thumbs down.
- Coma - (Geneviève Bujold, Michael Douglas) - People start dying during routine surgeries; one suspicious doctor fights against all odds to find the truth! One of the best thrillers, even to this day. Thumbs up.
- Dan In Real Life - (Juliette Binoche, Steve Carell) - A widower falls in love with his brother’s girlfriend during a family vacation. Steve Carell in a great dramatic role, which shows he does have range outside “The Office.” Thumbs up.
- Jumper - (Hayden Christensen, Rachel Bilson, Samuel L. Jackson) - A disaffected man discovers he has the ability to teleport himself anywhere in the world. Bad guys, led by Samuel Jackson, are out to kill him. This is an interesting action/adventure film. Thumbs up.
- Run, Fat Boy, Run - (Simon Pegg, Thandie Newton) - Simon (the guy from “Shaun of the Dead“) attempts to win the love of his ex-wife by competing in a marathon. Unfortunately, he’s in no shape to run a marathon. This movie is a very light-hearted comedy. If you’re in the mood for a laugh, get this. Thumbs up.

I saw Empire of the Ants when I was a young kid on Saturday or Sunday afternoon TV and yes Joan Collins was hot! It would be fun to revisit as an adult.
IMHO Ghost Rider sucked! And you may be onto something with that deviated septum theory.
Brad, I have to say that I was not a big fan of “we own the night”. It is not a movie that I would go out of my way to see again.
Hey! This is actually useful!

@Danny - “We Own the Night,” while a great movie, is not one that I’d make an effort to watch again…too much drama for my taste.
@XUP - Everyone once in a while, I’ll stop with the random ramblings and produce something useful to mankind. But I think I’ve met my quota for this quarter.
Hey…is “Cobra” the one where he says, “You’re the disease. I’m the cure.” Because that is an excellent and memorable line that I am compelled to say whenever I’m using a toothpick. I use toothpicks just to say this line in fact. Also saw it on TBS.
Grumpus’s last blog post..Nightingale Droppings.
@Grumpus - Yes, that’s the line from the movie. That, plus the fact that he never removes his leather gloves the entire movie, are just two of the reasons to watch it.
Couldn’t agree more with your comments about You Don’t Mess With The Zohan. Spent the whole movie thinking, ‘it’s sort of funny, perhaps I should find it a more funny, maybe it’ll get really funny soon’. But it never did manage to hit that laughter button.
